Graveyard grass crept and crawled around Zac, like the thin fingers of the dead. Traditionally, life and death were split by a clear divide, and mixing the two still felt uncomfortable for him. I always thought it was a one way street, Zac thought, leaning against the metal fence of the graveyard, you're alive, you cross over, and then you stay dead.
Put like that, it sounded clear cut. Dead things stayed dead, and living things (hopefully) stayed living. But as Zac learned more about his Avatar powers, that divide seemed more and more arbitrary.

In this preserved lot, the dead blended with the living in a ouroboric cycle. The secret was dirt. Stiff bodies and limp vegetation were fed into the ground endlessly, their strands and clumps subsumed by the soil. Only to rise again, reanimated, seething with life, aglow with fresh souls.
Zac's hand went to the Pokeballs on his hip. Boshi. The Turtonator had received an absolute thrashing from Tapu Bulu, and while Boshi had since recovered, it was a stern reminder of the realities of Pokemon battle.
Shin, Busta, Kev, Oscar and Oakley, Zappa. It was too close. Again.
It was only a matter of time before Zac lost someone.

What do I need to learn? Zac asked himself. It was the same question he had pondered after his thrashing at the hands of Bailey Cooper. What can I improve so that this doesn't happen again? He was already training his battle skills and his Pokemon, what else was there? What was the problem?
My Pokemon can fight, but it's not regular battles I'm worried about. It's crazy strong enemies and rampaging legendaries that are the problem. But how do I prepare to fight something like that?

If I want to fight something extraordinary, I need to be extraordinarily prepared. Zac ran rough fingers through his beard, thinking. I've got to start stepping up the training. If we can practice in extreme situations, then when the time comes they'll just be...environments.
It wasn't that easy though. He couldn't be careless when it came to his Pokemon. His friends and partners. I've gotta check with Eva Morales . Do this the right way. I don't want to end up with another Boshi incident.
On the way out of the graveyard, a stumbling, stain-sheeted little mound blocked Zac's path. Zac recognized the scrawled face paint and fake tail of a Mimikyu. When he'd first seen one, it had been a terribly fright, and a pressing threat to the gentle Michi's mental health. But now? Zac had seen the bedazzled and chibified charms of the little 'character' everywhere in Michi's house. Phone charms, fridge magnets, even a big sticker on her car. He couldn't bring himself to shatter that illusion by giving her the horrific visage from the forest, but this one seemed kinder. "Hey buddy, what's happening? Looking for a new home?" Zac asked, squatting down. "You're not too scary, are you?"
The Mimikyu waddled closer, gently bonking its fake head into Zac's leg. "I've got someone who'll take care of you! Wanna come with me?"
The faded yellow 'character' shivered with anticipation.
